Maternity Reflexology

What is Maternity Reflexology?

Maternity Reflexology is the use of specific techniques using fingers and thumbs on the feet, lower leg and hands.  Pregnancy is a time of great hormonal changes and this often stirs up emotions such as fear and apprehension.  The treatment encourages deep relaxation and gently brings balance to the body and mind.  The process works on a physical, emotional and spiritual level – pre-conceptually, throughout pregnancy, the birth itself and during the post-natal period. Both men and women may benefit from the balancing effects of Reflexology.  I will treat people in their first, second and third trimester, through labour and post-partum.

How can Reflexology assist during pregnancy?

During pregnancy a woman's body and mind go through drastic changes, including abundant emotional and hormonal changes.  Reflexology can gently assist with many pregnancy related emotions such as fear or worry, and physical ailments such as swollen ankles, heartburn, indigestion, pelvic pain, back ache, varicose veins and much more.  I will provide you with a series of simple Reflexology techniques that both and your partner can use, for hand and feet Reflexology.

During labour, Reflexology can assist with pain relief and relaxation.  Please see the link for studies listed on the NICE (National Institution for Health and Care Excellence) website.  These show ways in which complementary therapies can assist during labour and birth - https://www.evidence.nhs.uk/Search?q=complementary+therapies+in+labour

Reflexology for Fertility

Sometimes couples or individuals may struggle to become pregnant for a specific reason, or sometimes the reason is not known.  This can be a very difficult time.  Reflexology can offer gentle support by encouraging deep relaxation and assisting the body to work at its optimum level (homeostasis).

Some women may be starting fertility treatment.  I have assisted many clients through fertility treatments by offering gentle and nurturing sessions during this time.

Reflexology can help by :

  • encouraging relaxation

  • reducing high stress/cortisol levels

  • encouraging the return of menstruation and ovulation when periods have ceased

  • rebalancing of hormones, such as an over or under active thyroid

  • reducing fibroids and polycystic ovaries (PCOS)

  • assisting with pain levels and reducing endometriosis

  • aiding relaxation during fertility treatment

In some cases allopathic medicine and/or treatment may also be necessary alongside Reflexology, and it is recommend that you consult your GP if undergoing any treatment.
